Judas and the Black Messiah (February 12)

Daniel Kaluuya plays Illinois Black Panther Party Chairman Fred Hampton in this docudrama. The FBI felt that Hampton was a major threat in the 1960s, and recruited an informant, William O’Neal, played here by LaKeith Stanfield, to infiltrate the Black Panthers and keep an eye on Hampton. As O’Neal gets to know Hampton and the Black Panthers, he starts to realize that he may be on the wrong side of this conflict.

This movie will only be on HBO Max for 31 days after it drops, before likely returning to the service later in 2021.

Tom & Jerry (February 26)

William Hanna and Joseph Barbera created the constantly battling Tom the cat and Jerry the mouse back in 1940, and the duo, and their antics, have remained popular for decades. In this new animated-live action hybrid film, we see Tom and Jerry finally go their separate ways . . . at first. Then we shift to sometime later, where Jerry is creating chaos at a high-end NYC hotel, just before a massive wedding is to take place. The manager of the hotel asks a staff member, played by Chloë Grace Moretz, to get rid of Jerry. She decides to bring in Tom to take out the mouse, and even more chaos ensues. But is there something else going on that threatens both Tom and Jerry this time?

This movie will only be on HBO Max for 31 days after it drops, before likely returning to the service later in 2021.

Earwig and the Witch (February 5)

Earwig and the Witch is the latest animated film, and the first to use full 3D CGI, from Japan’s famed Studio Ghibli. Set in England during the 1990s, the movie centers on a 10-year-old orphan girl named Earwig. She thinks she is like everyone else, but unknown to her, she’s actually the daughter of a witch. However, she’s then adopted by a strange couple, and Earwig is made to live with a real witch. Slowly, she starts to discover that she might have powers of her own.
