  • Samsung has permanently dropped the price of the Galaxy Z Flip 5G by $250, to $1,200.
  • This makes it Samsung’s lowest-priced foldable phone yet.
  • Whether or not it’s worth buying over the S21 Ultra is another matter.

If you’ve wanted a foldable phone but were put off by the steep prices, the decision might now be a little easier. Samsung has permanently cut the price of the unlocked Galaxy Z Flip 5G to $1,199.99 — a $250 drop.

That makes the Galaxy Z Flip 5G the lowest-priced foldable phone Samsung offers, and puts it well below the $1,999.99 of the Galaxy Z Fold 2. While it’s ‘only’ based on a 6.7-inch clamshell screen and uses last year’s Snapdragon 865 Plus chip, you’re still getting a fast device, solid cameras, 256GB of storage, and a design that can fit into some of the smallest pockets.

Whether or not the Galaxy Z Flip 5G makes the most sense at that lower price is another matter. The same $1,199.99 will also get you Samsung’s 128GB Galaxy S21 Ultra, which boasts a faster processor, a more durable screen, and a much more powerful camera setup. A standard Galaxy S21 or S21 Plus will outperform the Flip in some areas, too.

Even so, this may be tempting. The Galaxy Z Flip 5G is still part of a very small club, with the $1,400 Motorola Razr 5G as one of its few direct rivals — you’re getting a rare experience at a relatively low price. It might be what you’re looking for if you’re tired of monolithic slabs of glass and metal, or yearn for the days when clamshell phones were commonplace.
